Herbs and other alternative therapies were the original medicine. Ancient cultures used herbs and plants to stay healthy and cure illness. But, for years after the pharmaceutical world took over treatment, the Western world lost interest in alternative therapies.

Today, however, interest in alternative therapies is renewed. Many people are choosing to treat some conditions naturally before trying medicines. For example, many people recently diagnosed with high blood pressure and high cholesterol are choosing to increase their exercise, change their diet and lose excess weight before resorting to high blood pressure and cholesterol medications. In many cases, patients can reverse their blood pressure and cholesterol problems without ever needing medication.

Other patients are using alternative therapies as adjuncts to traditional medicine. For example, green tea has been shown to improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy in some forms of cancer. Drinking large amounts of tea while undergoing chemotherapy treatments can increase the concentration of the chemo drugs in the cancerous cells, making it more effective.

A large number of people are also using alternative therapies for preventative purposes. Take green tea, for example. It has been shown to prevent many types of illness, including heart disease, Alzheimer’s and some forms of cancer. Others use yoga to relieve stress and massage to manage muscle and joint pain.

But, what if you’re pursuing alternative therapies at the same time that you’re using conventional drug therapies? Is there a chance that there could be interaction between the two?

Well, the answer is, possibly. There are thousands of drugs being prescribed for hundreds of different conditions today, and no doubt some of the drugs will interact with some of the alternative therapies.

Since alternative therapies have become so popular, some research has been performed to determine how, and if, some of the most popular alternative therapies interact with drugs.

One study, in particular, reported by the UK Tea Council studied the effects of flavonoids on drug therapies. Flavonoids were chosen for study because they are contained in so many substances that we many of us consume regularly, and because flavonoids are generally thought to be very healthy.

Flavonoids are a type of anti-oxidant. Anti-oxidants are extremely important to our health because they combat free radicals. Free radicals are created in our bodies as a by product of converting our food to energy. Free radicals damage our cells and DNA. Over time, this leads to premature aging and disease. Anti-oxidants combat these free radicals, preventing them from causing damage. Research has shown that a diet rich in anti-oxidants, including flavonoids prevents many forms of disease, such as cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s.

Fruits and vegetables contain flavonoids, as does beverages made from plants, such as tea and wine. But, doctors wondered, could these healthy flavonoids interfere with drugs that we may be taking for medical conditions?

The research mentioned above found that flavonoids can, in some cases, interfere with the transport of certain drugs. Transport refers to how drugs reach the organs or body systems they’re designed to affect.

In some cases, this could cause interactions between your medications and alternative therapies such as Gingko Biloba, Milk Thistle, green tea, and soy isoflavones. It’s not likely that the flavonoids found in your food would interact, as they are not typically consumed in highly concentrated quantities as is found in herbal supplements.

So, for example, if you’re drinking three or four cups of green tea each day to help protect your health, it’s unlikely that there would be any interaction. However, if you’re taking 10-12 capsules of green tea extract each day, your concentration of flavonoids would be significantly higher, and might cause some interaction.

This information is not designed to influence you to stop using flavonoids to protect your health. Research has shown time and again that they’re very effective at keeping you young and healthy. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, green tea and other anti-oxidant sources can help you keep your weight in check, lower your cholesterol and even regulate insulin.

However, as with any alternative therapy you’re considering, it’s important to keep your doctor in the loop. Inform him of any alternative therapies you’d like to try, and find out how they might interact with any particular medicines you’re taking. This way you can ensure that you’re treating your particular health concerns in the best way possible, whether that means traditional medicines alone – or in combination with alternative treatments.

It’s nearly impossible for researchers to list every possible medication and every alternative therapy that it might interact with. But, working closely with your doctor, who knows your medical history, health concerns and treatments can ensure that you’re pursuing the healthiest route for treatment.

We’re all concerned about our health. And, many of us are also concerned about using natural, healthy remedies whenever possible, as well as taking advantage of all we’ve learned about how substances like anti-oxidants can prevent disease. Alternative remedies can be a great way to stay healthy, but it’s important to always consult your doctor before you begin something new.

Alternate Therapies

When we speak of medicine or treatment of diseases, we often take into consideration, only the scientific or commonly known as Allopathic medicine. However, in reality, there are a wide range of therapies and treatments in the world that do not involve use of any chemicals and are considered to be safe.

These practises or therapies, form a second branch of medicine, known as Alternative Medicine or Alternate Therapy. The scientific strata call this form of treatment as baseless or unscientific. Even terms like ‘quackery’ are associated with it. But there are a large number of people who prefer these forms of medication to the conventional medical treatment.

These alternate therapies are practised with an aim to heal. It is the belief of those who follow it that the body suffers less damage overall through such alternate therapies. Since there is no empirical evidence that these alternate therapies fight diseases as effectively as general medicine, we cannot confirm this belief.

Let us now take a look at some of the most common alternate therapies:

1. Acupuncture

It is a form of Chinese alternate therapy, where very thin needles are inserted into specific points (acupuncture) in the body. It is used most commonly for pain relief. Also, it is not used entirely on its own, rather with the normal course of a treatment.

Acupuncture is recommended for lower back pain, muscle stiffness, etc.

2. Chiropractic

It is used to diagnose and treat mechanical issues of the musculoskeletal system. That includes the spinal cord, major joints and tissues. The belief is that these issues can affect the general health of a person, via the nervous system. The therapy involves manipulation of spine, setting of bones and massaging parts to relieve pains.

3. Homeopathy

This is a popular form of alternate therapy, especially in India. It runs on the belief that ‘like cures like’, meaning, substances that cause diseases in healthy people, can cure them in sick people.

Medication in this system is delivered through solutions, which are poured onto sugar pills or homeopathic pills, which are then consumed.

4. Naturopathy

A rather new creation, naturopathy, involves a combination of homeopathy, acupuncture, good diet and sufficient exercise. It draws from various natural healing ideas. Most often these treatments are said to have a placebo effect, where the disease cures itself overtime and a person feels like it is the medicine doing the trick.

5. Ayurveda

Ayurveda, one of the oldest forms of medicine, practised anywhere in the world, originated in the Indus Valley Civilization, around 5000 BCE.

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit term which means life-knowledge (Ayu-life, Veda – Knowledge). It basically involves, diagnosis of the patient, by checking the Nadi or pulse and various other factors like the tongue, eyes etc.

Medication involves crushing various herbs, known to have medicinal properties, using natural oils and other things. No form of chemical is permitted into the medication, as it is seen as a toxin.

Although Ayurveda falls under alternate therapies, most medical practitioners have conceded that the use of certain plants and herbs, to cure diseases, are similar to that in allopathy, where herb and plant extracts are used. However, it is considered a pseudoscience, due to lack of empirical evidence.

6. Reiki

It is a well renowned, alternative healing practice, which originated in Japan.

It uses, what is referred to as ‘Palm Healing’. The healer, uses his palm, to radiate universal energy on the patient and this transfer of energy, in turn, causes a healing process which begins within the body.

7. Others:

• Faith Healing
• Osteopathy
• Chinese Medicine, etc.

Alternate medicine, used to be a lot more prominent and accepted earlier, before the advances in general medicine. People, even in the earlier parts of the 20th century, often turned alternate medicine, when they were told that their condition was not curable. But, mid-century, when there were some phenomenal discoveries made in the field of science and medicine, allopathy gained prominence and medical practitioners or doctors became Gods. Which is not wrong, considering how many lives are saved every day by them.

But there are certain advantages that alternate therapies have over normal medicine.

Advantages of Alternative Therapies

• They do not use harmful chemicals and are more than often, safer to consume for almost anyone, even children after a certain age.
• They are not as expensive as allopathic medications are, sometimes.
• They have healing as their base. So the idea is not just to cure and leave it, but to heal the body.
• Allopathic medication uses extracts, while most medication in alternative therapy uses the plant as a whole. This means it is cost effective.
• It is said to have a longer lasting effect and can be taken over a longer period without any significant harm.
• Many forms of alternate healing, like faith healing, don’t use any medication at all. They simply make use of spiritual beliefs and prayers. This is least harmful if done in a normal and non-extreme fashion.

And like anything that has advantages, alternate therapy has its disadvantages too. Looking at both advantages and disadvantages will help you get a clearer picture of what is more feasible.

Disadvantages of Alternate Therapies

• Takes a very long time to show effect. Sometimes months or years too
• There may be allergic reactions that cannot be understood previously, since no tests are conducted as such.
• Medication in alternate therapies, may not suit everyone. It could make a situation worse.
• There is no concrete diagnosis. Allopathic medical practitioners, make use of a variety of tests before prescribing any medication. But in alternate therapies, there is only diagnosis based on the senses.
• The most serious criticism against alternative therapies is that, there is no empirical evidence that it can actually cure a disease. Only theories exist.

They say that all healing takes place in the mind. They also say that you if you can’t see the results, it isn’t real.

But the ultimate question is about your faith in the process. We are all slaves of our mind. If our mind believes we can be cured through one thing and not the other, our body will never be completely fine.

Real or not, alternate therapy is an existing practise. One which has gained prominence and followers worldwide. And after all, no matter what the medicine. If it goes in and kills the disease, it is a miraculous poison!

People seek alternative therapies for fibromyalgia for many reasons: a desire to avoid numerous prescription medications, the ineffectiveness of prescription medications, the number of unwanted side effects associated with them, or a desire for a more natural therapy for fibromyalgia are just a few.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy and pain management therapy are sometimes used as alternative treatments for fibromyalgia.

Rather than relieving the pain, these therapies focus on coping with the pain, learning to relax the muscles, reduce stress and avoid negative thinking patterns that may make the perception of the pain greater than it actually is. These alternative treatments for fibromyalgia focus on the mind-body connection and, in particular, how the mind can affect the body. Cognitive-behavioral and pain management therapies have been effective for some people.

Massage and chiropractic therapy are sometimes used as alternative treatments for fibromyalgia. And third, physical activity increases blood flow and oxygen supplies to the muscles. A lack of oxygen in the muscles is believed by some to be one of the causes of fibromyalgia pain.

As natural therapy for fibromyalgia, many people have tried herbs, botanicals and vitamin supplements. Proper nutrition is also important in good health. Unfortunately, chronic pain often leads to depression in many people and, subsequently, they forget or don’t care about eating right and taking care of themselves.

Some of the vitamins and minerals that may be considered as alternative therapies for fibromyalgia include B-complex, omega-3 and 6 fatty acids. These recommendations are related to enhancing energy, mood and healthy joint function.

Sam-E is sometimes recommended as a natural therapy for fibromyalgia, but Sam-E can have unwanted side effects and should be used with care, as should St. John’s wort and kava for depression relief. None of these herbal, botanical and vitamin supplements which are sometimes recommended as alternative therapies for fibromyalgia can relieve pain, but there is one botanical product which often can.

The mangosteen is a fruit that grows only in areas of Southeast and Central Asia and was used traditionally by native peoples in these areas to treat a number of conditions including pain.

Laboratory studies and chemical evaluation has shown that the mangosteen contain analgesics, anti-inflammatory agents and Cox-2 inhibitors, all of which are pain relievers.

Many people who have tried mangosteen supplements or juice as a natural therapy for fibromyalgia have reported amazing results. Of the many alternative therapies for fibromyalgia, mangosteen is one of the few that can address many different symptoms, not only pain, but also depression, fatigue, sleeping problems and lack of energy.

Meaning of Alternate Therapies


The concept of alternative therapies or alternative medicines began to take real shape after the 1990′s decade, initially in America. That was the decade when doctors started to realize just how many Americans were using alternative medicine, starting with a 1993 paper published in ‘The New England Journal of Medicine’. The paper reported that one in three Americans was using some kind of “unconventional therapy.” Only 28 percent of them were telling their primary-care doctors about it.

Alternative therapies of Indian origin

5. Pranic Healing

Pranic healing is a highly developed and tested system of energy-based healing techniques that utilizes prana (life-force) to balance, harmonize and transform the body’s energy processes. Pranic healing is a simple yet powerful and effective no-touch energy healing. It is based on the fundamental principle that the body is a “self-repairing” living entity that possesses the innate ability to heal itself. Pranic healing works on the principle that the healing process is accelerated by increasing the life force or vital energy on the affected part of the physical body.

And that is exactly what happens. Allergies have been completely turned around with urine therapy.

Multiple sclerosis, colitis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, hepatitis, hyperactivity, pancreatic insufficiency, psoriasis, eczema, diabetes, herpes, mononucleosis, adrenal failure, allergies and so many other ailments have been relieved through use of this therapy.

8. Laughter Therapy

In 2003-04 the first authentic research was completed by Dr. Ilona Papousek from the University of Graz in early fall 2004. According to the news release by Ananova – March 2004, a new study shows that laughter really is the best therapy for stroke patients, according to scientists. A study was conducted at a computer company where Mr. Thomas Flindt led a session of laughter yoga in the beginning of the day throughout the month of May 2004. This project shows clearly the effect that a regular practice of laughter yoga has on the stress levels. The body stress levels are significantly reduced.

9. Past Life Therapy

“Past life regression therapy includes the mental act of going back to a time prior to this life in order to retrieve memories that may still negatively influence a person’s present life.

Dr. Francis Menezes, who has regressed using hypnosis states, says, “To be able to go to your past life, most therapists take you back to yesterday, two days ago, last week, five years ago, ten years back, finally to your mother’s womb and beyond. To be born you have to die.” “In a hypnotherapy session, your master is in control of you, your blood count level is low, and your heartbeat is slow. Creating and marketing alternative therapy products is an extremely important aspect of the natural healing industry, and creating products that people want can fill a void in the market.

This might seem an obvious statement to make, but it applies to all internet marketing, not just to marketing alternative therapy products. Products do not just turn up – they have to be created and that takes time and effort. We are not discussing the actual treatment here, which are services, but to products such as eBooks, teleseminars and video presentations on the subject.

There is a significant difference between the therapy or treatment offered by alternative therapy practitioners and the products mentioned above, and that relates to information and advice. There are many more people out there in that big world market that will pay for information and advice on Reiki, faith healing, life coaching, hypnotherapy, energy healing and so on that do not want the actual treatment – or either say they don’t or believe they don’t.
